I was watching an episode of The Walking Dead on the train while on my way into work.
The main character Rick gave his son a single piece of advice and it’s a good one.
“Don’t talk, just listen, it’s a rule for life.”
It’s quite a simple little rule, but like many simple ideas, extremely hard to keep.
We all seem programmed to respond rather then taking the time to actually pay attention to what we are being told.
It’s also important to hear and understand when we listen. Try listening without respond to someone for over 10 minutes and you’ll see what I mean.
Learning to listen is not just a skill, it’s an art. It’s so easy to get into a habit of listening purely with the intention of responding. Break the cycle, keep your ears open and mouth shut, you may well learn something of value.
